Risk of Second Primary Cancer Among Women in the Kaiser Permanente Breast Cancer Survivors Cohort

In a cohort of 16,004 patients with primary stage 1-3 breast cancer at Kaiser Permanente, researchers evaluated for second cancer risk ≥ 12 months after first primary breast cancer diagnosis using SIRs, HRs, and cumulative incidence risk approaches based on demographics including treatment type, age, and year of first diagnosis. Over a follow-up of 6.2 years 1,562 patients developed  a second cancer, indicating that breast cancer survivors have a 70% higher risk of developing second cancer after first cancer diagnosis.
